About Japan America Society of St. Louis

The Japan America Society of St. Louis (JAS) is a premier 501(c)(3) educational, cultural, and business networking organization dedicated to fostering meaningful connections between Japan and the St. Louis, MO community. Since its founding in 1967, JAS has established itself as the major source of Japan-related information and authentic cultural experiences throughout the St. Louis Metropolitan region.

JAS offers a comprehensive range of programming and services designed to deepen understanding of Japanese culture and promote US-Japan relations. The organization hosts regular cultural workshops including ikebana (flower arrangement) instruction and traditional tea ceremonies, providing hands-on experiences in Japanese artistic traditions. Business networking events featuring expert speakers connect civic, educational, and business leaders with Japan interests, while specialized events like the annual Shinnenkai New Year celebration and Japan-themed Trivia Night offer engaging opportunities for community participation.

The Society's flagship initiative is the annual Japanese Festival held at the Missouri Botanical Garden every Labor Day weekend—one of the largest and oldest Japanese festivals in North America, attracting 30,000 to 40,000 visitors annually. JAS also partners strategically with local universities and museums to develop and deliver authentic Japanese educational programs and cultural presentations. Additionally, the organization serves as the umbrella organization for the Japan America Society Women's Association and Seinen-kai (Association of Young Men and Women), while providing operational support to the St. Louis Japanese Language School. Membership is open to all individuals regardless of heritage who share an interest in Japan and US-Japan relations, offering opportunities for networking, cultural learning, and community leadership development.
