About Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations

The Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations represents the Government of Japan and operates through five specialized sections that address critical global issues. Based in New York, NY, the Mission engages in comprehensive diplomatic work across multiple sectors including political affairs, economic development, social policy, administration, and coordination. The Political Section handles regional security matters before the Security Council, disarmament and non-proliferation initiatives, peacekeeping operations, and international justice issues. The Economic Section manages development assistance, reconstruction aid, environmental policy, and coordination with major UN agencies including the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and UNICEF. The Social Section addresses human rights, humanitarian concerns, and human security matters. The Administrative, Budgetary & UN Recruitment Section negotiates UN budget matters and country assessment rates while working to increase Japanese nationals in UN institutions. The Coordination Section manages protocol, communication, security, and accountability while facilitating inter-sectional coordination and media relations. The Mission pursues eight core objectives including maintaining international peace and security, achieving practical disarmament and non-proliferation, promoting the UN development agenda, enhancing human rights engagement, advancing UN reform including Security Council reform, promoting human security, improving UN fiscal discipline, and increasing Japanese representation in UN organizations. With approximately 100 staff members working from their New York headquarters, the Mission coordinates negotiations with UN agencies and member states to advance Japan's diplomatic priorities on the global stage.
